Artificial Intelligence and Human Distortion

I gave a talk at UT-Austin as one of the non-resident fellows at the Bech-Loughlin First Amendment Center. The talk covers what AI is, how it differs from traditional algorithms, why it deserves First Amendment protection, and what we can do to prevent misinformation at scale. Those who came to the talk asked great questions! This will ultimately become a paper called Artificial Intelligence and Human Distortion, which also involves exploration of the First Amendment’s marketplace of ideas theory.

  1. Interesting lecture indeed. 

    Beyond the issue of free market of ideas, the free speech, has more purposes of course. One of them, is the sense of living in freedom. 

    When human beings, can protest, can challenge the  government, criticize the latter,  they feel that they are free or living in freedom. This does create, mentally I mean, more balanced persons or citizens. 

    Citizens, are not little fishes, eaten constantly by great white sharks. They have their own say. They can change  things all around if they are not satisfied (and indeed, the first amendment, states clearly: “……to petition the government for a redress of grievances”). 

    Strictly, very important catharsis. 

    Now, how AI speech is connected to that notion ? First, in rather more technical terms, one person, may acquire insights, reasoning, knowledge, for criticizing the  government ( through AI). It is done, without mediators ( media) through direct and customized questions. In mental terms, it does improve the  rational or purpose presented  above: 

    One may find, mental shelter, or reassurance, in chatting intimately with AI (as many do by the way) and reorganize his knowledge and mental  states, concerning what is  going around him, in the political and public sphere.

    This is done, in very particular, helpful, and unique, and customized manner for too many persons.

    That is why, AI speech, does merit protection. Even solely for that reason.
